Find out your personal net worth

Before you get started

Make a list of all of your assets and their values, including, but not limited to:

  • Property
  • Cars
  • Vehicles
  • Stocks and shares
  • Businesses
  • Cash
  • Pensions

Make a list of all of your liabilities and their values, including, but not limited to:

  • Mortgages
  • Credit cards
  • Loans (including finance and student)
  • Other credit (store cards etc)
  • Other loans (personal)

To make things a little more interesting, why not write a figure down that you’d like your net worth to be or think it is at the moment? Then we can see if the reality surprises you.

One of the key routes to financial independence is leveraging your net worth. But how can you make informed decisions on what types of investments to make or how much if you don’t know what your net worth is, or even understand it?

By knowing your net worth you will be able to:

  • Understand what assets are working for you and which ones aren’t
  • Be better placed to make investment decisions that fit your financial capital
  • Understand how much money you actually have to potentially reinvest
  • Improve your financial health in the long-term

What is your net worth?

  • In simple terms, your net worth is your assets minus your liabilities. So, if you sold everything you own and paid off everything you owe, that will give you your net worth.
  • It’s the value of all the things you own (significant assets and not your sock collection), such as your home, car, pensions and cash savings, subtracted from the combined value of your debts, including what you owe on those assets such as loans and mortgages.
  • Needless to say, your personal net worth should be a positive, not a negative figure.
  • One of the key routes to financial independence is leveraging your net worth and this this is precisely what we have helped our Franchise Partners understand. Most of them knew that investing in property was the way to financial independence but they didn’t know how they could afford it.

At Platinum Property Partners, we have helped more than 250 Franchise Partners to turn £300,000 of investment capital into a lifelong income of £50,000 to £150,000 from their own specialist buy-to-let property business.

Mike Anderson, Franchise Partner

“I would never have achieved this level of financial security if I had stayed within the corporate environment, paying each month into an underperforming pension. Now, not only do I have a healthy monthly income, I am also building significant capital by redeveloping properties, but the best thing is that I now have a lifestyle I could never have achieved previously. My wife and I now have the time to nip for a coffee whenever we want, and if the family want to go on holiday, these days it’s a question of how long would we like to be away for, rather than can I get the time off.”
